Physical Improvements to Lanakila Public Housing Demolition of Phase IIIb & IV (Big Island)

The Lanakila Public Housing Demolition of Phase IIIb & IV project was subcontract work with Constructors Hawaii, inc. for Hawaii Public Housing Authority.

The main objective of this project was to encapsulate soils contaminated with lead, mercury, arsenic, and chlordane at Lanakila’s Public Housing to prevent the hazardous chemicals from spreading into the neighboring homes and St. Joseph Elementary and High School. The completion of this project provided the community with a grassy recreation area that can also be utilized in the future for affordable housing development

Working with contaminated materials and reclaiming chemically impacted land brought a unique set of challenges. Koga Engineering & Construction Inc. emphasized and communicated with team members that the worker’s safety and importance of protecting the environment and adjacent neighbors are essential.

Workers were able to minimize the exposure and spread of the contaminated soil by wearing Personal Protective Equipment, laying out the proper Best Management Practices (BMPs), and consistently following the housekeeping rules. Koga Engineering & Construction, Inc. was able to successfully remove all contaminated material throughout the work area without any lost time or recordable incidents.
